THE GANG THAT SHOT UP HOLLYWOOD
(Creatures at Large Press – 2011)
This brings together five exclusive interviews I did with CLINT EASTWOOD, starting with DIRTY HARRY and MAGNUM FORCE and extending through his work on THE UNFORGIVEN, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS and LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA. While on Iwo Jima, find out how JOHN WAYNE saved the U.S. Marine Corps from being mustered out in 1949 with the coming of THE SANDS OF IWO JIMA. And meet the real men who put up those flags atop Mt. Suribachi. Also explored in great detail are brothers ROBERT MITCHUM and JOHN MITCHUM, and how they shook Hollywood, each in a unique way. Learn many secrets about the Mitchums because I was very close to John, having published his autobiography THEM ORNERY MITCHUM BOYS.
Two interviews with JAMES STEWART follow, then a collection of “femme fatale” dames: LAUREN BACALL, JANE RUSSELL, COLEEN GRAY, ANN SAVAGE, MARIE WINDSOR, IDA LUPINO, BARBARA STANWYCK, EVELYN KEYES, ANNE FRANCIS, CARROLL BAKER and ANNE PARILLAUD. Next up, you’ll meet KARL MALDEN and MICHAEL DOUGLAS during their years making “The Streets of San Francisco.” One of my personal favorites in this book: A recounting of my meetings with writer-producer-director SAMUEL FULLER, for by chance I happened to be on the set of his film THE NAKED KISS on the afternoon in 1963 when he got into an argument with his producer and would pay a heavy price. It brought his Hollywood career to a sudden stop and he never fully recovered, although he did manage to make THE BIG RED ONE, the story of the U.S. Infantry unit with which he fought throughout World War II. Finally you’ll meet CHUCK NORRIS, who was my guest on CREATURE FEATURES on more than one occasion, and threw me (more than once) for a loop.

LOST IN TIME AND SPACE WITH LEFTY FEEP
By Robert Bloch – Creatures at Large Press – 1987
ROBERT BLOCH, author of PSYCHO, originally wrote a series of short stories about a racetrack tout named Lefty Feep for the pulp magazine FANTASTIC ADVENTURES from 1942-46. Although all his fans were always talking about Lefty Feep, those stories had never been reprinted until I approached Bloch in 1986 about publishing them as an anthology. He agreed to write one new story for the first book and allowed me to take a collection of photographs of him at his home in the Hollywood Hills, which I sprinkled throughout the book along with a lengthy interview in which he described how he had written each story. Popular fantasy writer CHELSEA QUINN YARBORO was kind enough to write an introduction, and I also wrote a history of Bloch, written in the tongue-in-cheek style for which he was famous. Lefty Feep was a racetrack tout who Bloch patterned after himself, and who was always getting involved in some fantastic adventure played strictly for laughs by Bloch. Unfortunately, Bob would die of lung cancer before we could get the rest of the Lefty Feep stories into print.

Stay tuned to this website for additional material that will soon be going up for sale. I will also be putting up reviews of horror, science-fiction and fantasy movies in the near future. Many will be long-forgotten or now-obscure films I reviewed when I was a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle. I’m also going to share with you as many rare photographs of the world of sci-fi and horror movies as I can.
Wishing you well for 2016,
