When the human head gets stretched out of all proportion, twisted like a faucet handle, and ends up “head”-ing into another dimension, it’s time to sit down and catch your breath. And pray your throat is headed in the right direction. It must have hurt for William Hurt, portraying scientist Eddie Jessup at the Harvard Medical School, to go through the special effects process in the 1980 scientific thriller Altered States. An isolation tank of deep water and the taking of hallucinogens leads to this visual delight/mess/movie madness. What gave this popularity was the reputation of British director Ken Russell and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky. In the end, just another mad scientist foray into cinematic madness.

Here we have a babyish biological version of what will grow into the larger Alien in this early scene when the crew of the spaceship Nostromo discovers an alien spacecraft crashed on a planetoid. Inspecting the interior, crew member Kane (John Hurt) finds a chamber filled with strange eggs, one of which explodes open and a tiny E.T. life-form attaches itself to Kane’s face. It grows (pardon the word) from there into a full-scale terrifying, hideous being unlike any E.T. in cinema before. Or since.
